2013 was a fantastic year all around the world for crowdfunding.  Equity crowdfunding (and similar) laws have been enacted in many countries, as well as in individual US states.  Reward-based crowdfunding platforms continued to facilitate the transfer of millions of dollars.  Kickstarter and Indiegogo, the two largest platforms, remain on top of the crowdfunding world in terms of popularity and the total amount of money crowdfunded.  Below is a list of the most crowdfunded projects of all time (as of January 1, 2014).  We compiled the data directly from the websites.

Brief conclusions and predictions: Crowdfunding is growing. Perks matter: technology projects that offer serious gadgets to backers tend to raise the most money. The next most successful category seems to be video games in the pre-development stage that go viral within the gaming community. And last but not least are projects that feature celebrities (i.e. Zach Braff and Kristen Bell). People like getting things in return for their donations and support, so we expect equity crowdfunding – with its promise to make backers actual owners – to eventually take center stage and eclipse its reward-based counterpart.
